Instagram now lets you edit captions, suggests accounts to follow in new People tab

Instagram today updated its mobile app with two new features: caption editing and a People tab. You can download the new version now directly from Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

First up, the app now lets you go back and edit captions on your posts (including their location). Instagram says this has been “one of the top requests that we’ve heard from the community.”

To change a caption, located the new Edit option in the menu beneath your image. All you have to do is tap it, tweak your caption, and hit Done.

It’s worth noting that the word Edited will appear above modified captions. This is only visible when you tap to see the comments for a post, as you can in the third screenshot above.

The Facebook-owned company explains this new feature best: “When you share a moment to Instagram, a typo shouldn’t get in the way.” Right, caption editing should have been available from the very start.

Next up, the Explore page on Instagram has been improved to help you find people you may want to follow. The first thing you’ll notice is that the Explore icon at the bottom of your screen has changed to a magnifying glass.

When you tap it, you’ll now see two tabs: Photos and People. The former has not changed at all, and still shows you the same scrolling grid of photos and videos. The latter, however, suggests interesting accounts you may want to follow, based on “a variety of factors, including who you follow, who you’re connected to, and what you like on Instagram,” an Instagram spokesperson told VentureBeat.

There’s one more improvement Instagram doesn’t include in its announcement, but does in the changelog for its apps: “Get quicker results with typeahead search.” In other words, the search feature should let you find photos much faster with this update.

These are welcome features for existing Instagram users, but they’re not significant enough to bring in new users. That’s fine for now, as Instagram is still the most popular social network for photos, aside from Facebook of course.
