In its fourth quarter earning results today, Apple announced that iPhone sales rose 91 percent year-over-year to 14.1 million units sold.
The iPhone’s strong sales led Apple to beat out Research in Motion’s 12.1 million BlackBerry phones sold in its most recent quarter.
So what does this tell us? For one, despite the fact that the “antennagate” scandal forced Apple to give away free cases to iPhone 4 owners, consumers still wanted to get their hands on the phone — antenna issues be damned.
It’s also clear that demand for the iPhone 4 far exceeded anything in RIM’s stable — which isn’t a huge surprise. RIM’s only major hardware release in the last quarter was its BlackBerry Torch, which was received with lukewarm enthusiasm.
