JoyBits has seen more than 170 million downloads of its Doodle series of games on mobile devices. And today, it is extending the franchise with a new puzzle game, Doodle Tanks, for iOS and Windows devices.

London-based JoyBits said its games — such as Doodle God, Doodle Kingdom, Doodle Devil, and Doodle Creatures — have been played in more than 150 countries. The new title has the same kind of gameplay as previous games, where you mix and match parts (in this case, pieces of tanks) to come up with something new. The net result is you create custom tanks.

The company is publishing Doodle Tanks on the iPhone, iPad, Windows 8, and Windows phone devices in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of World War II. In the game, you can create dozens of World War II-era tanks and armored vehicles. You can mix and match blueprints and artillery parts, and you can learn about famous tank designers as you play.

You don’t, however, actually get to fight battles with your tanks. You are essentially becoming a tank designer in the game, but there is no tank fighting where you test the designs. That kind of gameplay is expected to come later this year, the company said.

“If you love Doodle God, its time to go to war,” JoyBits CEO Paul Baldwin said in a statement. “With Doodle Tanks, you don’t have to be a skilled engineer to create the powerful beasts that changed the course of military history.”

JoyBits is publishing the game in collaboration with Bytex Games.

“The Bytex team is excited to be collaborating with JoyBits on Doodle Tanks,” Bytex CEO Dmitri Karasev said in a statement. “We hope gamers worldwide will enjoy the combination of mix-and-match puzzle gameplay with the history of armored vehicles.”

Doodle Tanks is available in six languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese.
