MacBook Air will have a 12-inch display, but be smaller than the current 11-inch model (rumors)

The MacBook Air made everyone’s bags much lighter and spawned countless design copies from PC manufacturers, but the next generation might look pretty different.

Rumor has it that sometime in the spring, Apple will release a new MacBook Air that will have a 12-inch display (it currently offers 11- and 13-inch screens), and that the design will be overhauled to make the laptop thinner, according to a report from 9to5Mac.

The body will be noticeably smaller than the current 13-inch laptop, but will also be narrower (by a quarter of an inch), yet taller (also by a quarter of an inch) than the current 11-inch version to accommodate for the larger display.

The major design changes include an edge-to-edge keyboard (almost no space between the keys and the edges of the body), narrower keys, a slightly differently shaped trackpad with no clicking sound, relocated speaker grills and ventilation holes, and fewer ports than previous models.

The changes in the ports are particularly significant: Apple is ditching all of them except for the headphone jack and dual microphones, and it is replacing the traditional standard USB ports, the SD Card slot, and its Thunderbolt and MagSafe charging standards with a USB Type-C port. This new kind of USB port, along with being smaller and faster than USB 2.0 and 3.0, can actually drive displays as well as charge the laptop.

The laptop might also come in the new “Space Gray” color Apple has been using for some of its iOS devices.

The new laptop is said to likely ship in mid-2015, possibly around Apple’s WWDC event.
