Mafia III gets an October 7 release date

Mafia III’s official Twitter account revealed that the open-world gangster game is coming out on October 7. It will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Mafia III is about (you guessed it) a group of mobsters, this time set in the New Orleans-inspired New Bordeaux during 1968. The October release date will make sure that the game comes out in time for the lucrative holiday season, when sales for console games are at their highest thanks to all of the gift-giving.

Right now, this positions Mafia III as 2K’s (and parent company Take-Two’s) big, blockbuster release for the holiday season. Take-Two has a history with successful open-world games, including huge hits like the Grand Theft Auto series and Red Dead Redemption. However, the company hasn’t released any games in those series this year (although Grand Theft Auto V continues to do well), so Mafia III will have some extra pressure to deliver.

“Mafia III introduces a true open world, rich with its own criminal ecosystems to the franchise, while still upholding the strong narrative storytelling and immersive setting that the previous Mafia games are known for,” said Haden Blackman, the studio head and creative director at developer Hangar 13, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “New Bordeaux in 1968 provides a unique and powerful backdrop for our hard-boiled story of crime, betrayal, loyalty, and revenge.”

Publisher 2K also released a new trailer for Mafia III, which you can watch below.

The last entry in the series, Mafia II, came out back in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. That game took place in a fictional city called Empire Bay.
