Microsoft is adding to its data-collection capabilities for websites running in Internet Explorer 11, allowing companies to track usage and make changes as they see fit.

The new downloadable Enterprise Site Discovery Toolkit for IE11 “enables collecting information from Internet Explorer 11 about all sites that are visited by Enterprise users to build an inventory of sites used in the Enterprise,” Internet Explorer program manager Deen King-Smith wrote in a blog post today. “This information will help IT Pros prioritize which applications they should focus their app compatibility testing with Internet Explorer. This toolkit also provides additional information on how the site is designed and used by Internet Explorer and that information can then be used to populate the Enterprise Mode site list, mitigating compatibility issues of critical sites.”

The feature determines how many times a particular URL has been visited, as well as the number of times the browser has crashed, among other things. It could help companies that care about consumption of applications for their own employees.

Companies must manually turn on the new data-collection features and ensure the practice complies with all applicable laws, King-Smith wrote.
