Microsoft releases new Windows 10 preview for PCs and mobile with many bug fixes

Microsoft today announced the release of new Windows 10 preview builds for PCs and mobile devices for people in the fast ring of the Windows Insider Program. Unlike the build released on March 17 that brought extensibility to Microsoft’s Edge browser, this preview build doesn’t have any big new features — instead there are a bunch of bug fixes.

For instance, one bug fix in build 14295 addresses problems that people have been having with Kaspersky antivirus software.

“We have fixed the driver bug that prevents Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch,” Gabe Aul, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s engineering systems team, wrote in a blog post.

Also, PCs won’t freeze when you plug in an Xbox One or an Xbox 360 controller, or other game controllers, Aul wrote. An issue stopping the Xbox app and other Xbox Live apps from signing in has been fixed. And Edge won’t automatically refresh the tab you’re in if you hit the caps lock button while you’re typing in a password field.

On mobile, restoring all apps from a backup of build 14291 now works, and new languages and keyboards will be correctly downloaded — but there’s a bit of a hitch. “You will need to go to Update & security > Phone update and restart your phone manually from there for the new language and keyboard to go into effect,” Aul wrote.

Known issues in the PC build include crashes for certain apps like QQ, and the Narrator app not being able to read text that’s been selected in certain apps. On the mobile side, the Gadgets app won’t detect Microsoft’s Display Dock in certain cases, and the Microsoft Band may not properly sync. “To get out of this bad state, you can reset your phone on this build, re-pair your Microsoft Band, and syncing should work again,” Aul wrote.

This update will be rolling out to more devices than just the ones that ship with Windows 10. The Lumia 635 won’t be getting it, but that one will start getting Windows Insider updates later, Aul wrote.
