The Xbox One lineup got a complete overhaul in August, and this led to some big sales for Microsoft’s products.

Xbox One was the top-selling console thanks to the launch of the Xbox One S redesign, but that revamp also led to the Xbox One S Controller outselling all other gamepads in the United States, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. The new gamepad, which I reviewed, sold 79,000 units. That was enough to overtake Sony’s DualShock 4, which NPD analyst Sam Naji points out is typically the top-selling controller.

Microsoft launched the Xbox One S and Xbox One S controller August 2. These systems feature a new white color palette in addition to a number of other revisions. The console is slimmer, supports the expanded HDR color spectrum, and it can play UHD 4K Blu-ray movies. The controller, meanwhile, includes a number of subtle upgrades. Most notably, Microsoft has adjusted the resistance of its analog sticks, increased the range of its wireless receiver, and added Bluetooth connectivity.

Those updates make the Xbox One controller attractive to both console players as well as people who primarily do their gaming on a PC. With Bluetooth support, you can now connect an official Microsoft gamepad to your Windows machine without having to purchase a wireless dongle. The new stick even works with third-party devices like iOS and Android smartphones and Valve’s in-home streaming box Steam Link. I even got it connected to my PS4 — although it wouldn’t control anything.

Microsoft’s surging sales will not go untested for long. Sony just unleashed its own slimmer PlayStation 4 model September 15, and that comes with a revised DualShock 4.
