Groove Music, Microsoft’s music-streaming service (formerly known as Xbox Music and Zune), is now officially supported by Sonos speakers.
Microsoft revealed it was rebranding Xbox Music as Groove Music back in July, at the same time as it changed Xbox Video to “Movies & TV.” Both apps were made available soon after, in the Windows 10 preview. While Groove Music has been supported by Sonos speakers as a beta feature for about six weeks, today sees the full, public launch.
For $10 a month, Groove Music gives you ad-free streaming from a catalog of around 40 million songs, on the Web, Android, Windows Phone, iOS, desktop, and Xbox. You can also add your own digital music collection to the Music folder in your OneDrive account.
Given that Sonos, a popular brand of speakers, hadn’t previously supported Xbox Music, this is clearly a big boon for Microsoft’s music-streaming ambitions. Competitors such as Spotify have long supported Sonos speakers, making this an even more important move for Microsoft.
