The debate over Waterfall and Agile methodologies for developing software has raged on for years. Since Agile was introduced in 2001, it’s established itself more and more as a choice for teams to overcome disadvantages of the Waterfall approach, such as the inability to revisit requirements and respond to evolving needs.
Yet, it sometimes isn’t the best fit, particularly with projects requiring more governance and compliance. As well, recent research revealed that software built using a mix of both Agile and Waterfall methods produced more robust and secure applications. Mixing these two seemingly opposed methodologies requires masterful attention to culture, metrics, toolkits, reporting, and many other foundational underpinnings that make each company unique.
What’s also important to keep in mind in the ongoing debate is that many organizations who say they use Agile aren’t really following how it was designed. Instead, it can become an excuse for cranking out code quickly. It’s important to know that the methodology your team is using is actually adhering to its original process and intent, otherwise you’ll never really know the benefits to be gained by one or the other — or a blend of the two.
