Mozilla's new Firefox OS Flame smartphone is now available for preorder

After years of talking about a Firefox OS and a few different phone models, Mozilla is finally making its heralded Flame available.

The company announced today that it has opened preoders for the new Firefox OS Flame phone. Mozilla partnered with independent design house and manufacturer T2Mobile to manufacture the phone, and you can now preorder it through everbuying.com, according to a company blog post.

The phone will run on Mozilla’s own Firefox OS, which uses web-based apps instead of native apps, as leading mobile operating systems iOS and Android do.

“The Flame is representative of the mid-tier phone hardware Mozilla and its partners are targeting over the coming year. It was designed for our developer and contributor community, so we worked with the manufacturer, T2Mobile to keep the price as low as possible. We’re excited that we are able to bring a high quality reference device to our developer community at an affordable price,” the company said in the post.

Additionally, the phone has a software-configurable RAM option that can emulate a variety of different Firefox OS devices that will be available later this year, making it well suited for developers to begin developing and testing.

T2Mobile will also update the Flame with each new major Firefox OS refresh and offer a simple way to switch between different release channels.

Back in February, Mozilla announced this phone at the Mobile World Congress.

The phone will be unlocked, with specifications as follows: a Qualcomm dual-core1.2 GHz Snapdragon CPU; Wi-Fi; NFC; a 4.5 inch, 845-by-480 pixel display; adjustable RAM (256MB-1GB); 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera; and 8 GB of memory (among other details).

The phone will take about four weeks to ship once preordered for free anywhere in the world except Japan, which has different regulations than other regions on mobile phones. Devices certified for use in Japan will become available at a later date, according to Mozilla’s website.
