Nintendo is unleashing the power of its upgraded 3DS hardware to bring you some old games.
Starting today, Nintendo is releasing Super Nintendo games for the Virtual Console on New 3DS systems. This means that if you have a New 3DS or New 3DS XL, you can go on the Nintendo eShop and download Pilotwings, Super Mario World, or F-Zero today. The publisher plans to add Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario Kart on March 24. On April 14, the company sends out The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest.

Those systems use older hardware that apparently cannot run the SNES emulator that Nintendo has built for its upgraded handheld.
These new rereleases have save features and the option to play in the original Super Nintendo resolution on the New 3DS screen.
