New Apple TV reportedly coming this June with App Store and Siri

The new Apple TV may finally be on its way.

The device will reportedly debut at the World Wide Developers Conference in June, according to a report from Buzzfeed.

The new Apple TV will supposedly be made-over inside and out, including the introduction of Apple’s A8 chip (or something better, the report says), an updated operating system, support for Siri, and possible integration with Apple’s HomeKit — a play for the connected home.

A new app and games store is also expected to come out along with a software development kit.

Apple cut the price of Apple TV to $69 earlier this month, which means a new product could certainly be in the works.

The company has also made a strategic partnership with HBO for the content provider’s soon-to-be-released streaming service. In total Apple is expected to offer 25 channels including streaming from CBS, ABC, and Fox by the fall.

There are also rumors that Apple is in talks with Internet service providers like Comcast to have web television considered a managed service, according to the Wall Street Journal. If that happens, it would put television programming on its own Internet channel, which could potentially be free from data usage charges. A channel like this, operating away from other Internet traffic, could also be considered an “Internet fast lane,” something that conflicts with the FCC’s recent ruling on net neutrality, which says all Internet traffic should be treated equally.

Apple TV price cuts, a deal with HBO for its streaming service, rumored talks with Internet service providers for a un-congested Internet lane, and now murmurings of a revamped Apple TV, mean that Apple is making a serious play for the world of television — it’s no longer just a side project.
