New drone video shows progress on Apple ‘spaceship’ campus after one year of construction

While Apple still has a massive challenge to finish its new campus by the end of 2016, a new video shows how far the facility has come in just over one year.

Shot in 4K by a YouTube user named “myithz,” the video shows an array of large cranes set around the campus, which appears to have much of its foundation in place. The video was first reported by 9to5Mac.

Construction on the building was approved in November 2013, leaving it unclear whether Apple could meet its 2016 deadline.

Apple had to clear 176 acres of land, including thousands of trees and the 26 buildings previously on the site before it could begin construction. Eventually, the heart of the new headquarters will be the 2.8-million-square-foot circular building that will have four floors and an exterior almost entirely of curved glass.

The new facility will be home to up to 14,200 employees, almost triple the number previously working on the site. The latest video makes clear just how massive the footprint of the new campus will be.

In addition to more space, Apple wants the new campus to provide greater security. Indeed, a fence around the campus and thick foliage means the public won’t likely be able to see the main building from the ground level.

It will be interesting to see, once the building is complete, whether Apple takes any steps to prevent such flyovers by drones.
