Nintendo Switch’s first games: New Mario, Mario Kart, NBA 2K, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Nintendo has a new console coming in March. The Switch is a hybrid between a home system and handheld, and it looks fascinating in its debut trailer.

But, of course, it’s the games that really matter. And with that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the handful of games that Nintendo showed off running on the NX. This includes our first look at the new Mario and Mario Kart games as well as some third-party ports that should fill out the Switch’s launch lineup.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

We already knew about this one, but Nintendo finally showed it running on the Switch. The game looks a lot like what we saw running on the Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo tradeshow in June, but now it is fully portable. You can even play it as the sunrises.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Nintendo has promised to partner with a number of important developers and publishers for the Switch, and it showed that off with Bethesda’s open-world fantasy adventure The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In the video, we saw how you can continue the same game from the airport, to on the plane, to in the cab, and finally on a TV in your home. The system transforms over and over to fit into each one of these situations.

Mario Kart

Mario Kart is always among the best-selling games on any Nintendo platform, so you know the publisher is going to have one for the Switch. Well, the company has already confirmed that with a first look at the latest entry in the racing franchise for the hybrid console.

NBA 2K

Another third-party Switch game, and one of the biggest annual franchises in the world, NBA 2K from publisher Take-Two Interactive. This is consistently one of the best sports sims, and now Nintendo finally has it on one of its systems. But even more than that, this game shows off the Switch’s wireless connectivity features with four players playing simultaneously on two systems.

Mario

Nintendo is working on a new 3D Mario game. Super Mario 3D World was the last one of these, and it is one of the best Wii U games. Now, the company is back with more, and hopefully this’ll end up as one of the best Switch games.

Splatoon

Finally, Nintendo ended with a port of the Wii U shooter Splatoon. This competitive game where you fight against other people online as an ink-firing squidkid was one of the breakout hits on Nintendo’s last console, and the company isn’t abandoning it. In fact, it looks like the company is positioning it as an esport.
