Nuance sends its 3 billionth medical image through the cloud

Nuance says its Powershare cloud network has now enabled the sharing of 3 billion health images.

The Nuance cloud enables health providers to send diagnostic images like X-rays and MRIs across health care systems that are otherwise not networked together.

As a rule, the clinical-records systems of health care institutions don’t provide for sharing of diagnostic images. This can cause inconsistent and delayed treatment, and it added costs for unnecessary reimaging, Nuance says.

Nuances’s cloud system finds use with 2,000 provider organizations, including Children’s of Alabama, Intermountain Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, and Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Health systems buy a master license to the service and then push out the service to its departments or affiliated providers that want to send images over the network. Nuance then charges the health system based on traffic levels.

“The PowerShare Network has overwhelmingly improved the efficiency of our clinical workflow, especially in regards to outside images,” said Josh Pavlovec, picture archiving and communications system administrator at Children’s of Alabama in a statement. “Physicians love that they don’t have to deal with a CD anymore. The Network takes their mind off of whether or not they can access an image — allowing them to focus on treating patients.”

Nuance also has a mobile app for viewing medical images. According to a recent HIMSS survey, 70 percent of clinicians use mobile devices to view patient information.

Nuance is perhaps best known for its desktop and mobile speech recognition products.
