OnePlus has revealed that its One smartphone will finally receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update by March 30 this year, four months after the upgrade first started rolling out on Android.
The official OnePlus One over-the-air (OTA) update is based on CyanogenMod, as with the previous Android updates for the device. However, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has also confirmed a launch date for its very own custom-built Android operating system: OxygenOS. OnePlus has been teasing OxygenOS since last year, but it has hitherto failed to materialize — we now know that it will be arriving “on or before March 27,” according to a forum post, with users able to download the update from the OnePlus website.

But it hasn’t been easy to get ahold of one of these phones, with OnePlus adopting an invite-only system with small windows of opportunity for anyone to buy one.
The company has faced some criticism for striving to generate buzz and hype with its marketing and sales techniques, while also being slow to offer system updates. “We never intended to keep you waiting,” the company added in its recent forum post. “Unfortunately, we ran into some unexpected roadblocks.”

Today’s news will be welcome for the company’s growing army of fans around the world, though with Android 5.1 already rolling out elsewhere in the Android ecosystem, some OnePlus One-owners may feel as though they’re still being left behind.
