A German court has tossed out a lawsuit against Apple to the tune of $2.2 billion.
The case, brought by patent-assertion entity IPCom (also known as a patent troll), was dismissed alongside a separate lawsuit against HTC. Both cases concerned IPCom’s patents involving the 3G/UMTS cellular standard, FOSS Patents reports.
This news closely follows a joint letter by Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft, and more to EU officials in which they spoke out against patent trolls. According to Microsoft’s Deputy General Counsel Horacio Gutierrez, “more work [is] needed to protect [the] European Union from patent trolls.”
