Every once in a while consulting outfits pick up design expertise. Last year, for instance, McKinsey bought Lunar. But last year Salesforce acquired Akta, and Facebook acquihired people from Teehan+Lax.

Slice of Lime started in 2001. It has done work with MapQuest, Qdoba, SendGrid, and Sphero, among others.
Other recent Pivotal acquisitions include CloudCredo, Quickstep Technologies, and Xtreme Labs.
Pivotal is a joint venture initially created by VMware and EMC in 2012. In January 2015 San Francisco-based Pivotal said its Pivotal Cloud Foundry unit did around $40 million in revenue in less than one year. Pivotal did not release sales figures for other parts of the company, such as Pivotal Labs. Pivotal tweaked its big data strategy last year by open-sourcing multiple pieces of its previously proprietary software.
