Listening to music nowadays is almost universally effortless. But creating it? That’s not so easy.

Solving that problem is the idea behind Play My Tone, a social music maker that mixes, personalizes, and shares your musical creations.

“A couple of years ago, I was dating this girl and I completely forgout about our one month, one week, one day anniversary … I knew I had to move fast,” said founder Ohad Sheffer at the DEMO Conference in Santa Clara, Calif. “Back in the olden days I could have made a mix tape and send it over to her … today it’s about short messages.”

Sheffer says that rather than mix entire tracks, Play My Tone focuses on the sections of songs that users like the most. Sheffer calls it a “hi-fi personal statement.”

But music creation tools are a dime a dozen. So why create Play My Tone?

In a word, simplicity. A music lover himself, Sheffer either found that existing tools were too complicated or too rudimentary. Play My Tone, he says, sits nicely in the middle.

“I wanted to create a robust service that was also easy to use,” he said.

Play My Tone is one of 75 companies and 6 student “alpha” startups chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Fall 2012 event taking place this week in Silicon Valley. After we make our selections, the chosen companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.
