The video game industry has changed dramatically over the last few years. Not just in terms of horsepower from your PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, but in ease of availability and simplicity from your phone. And with social media sites like Facebook changing the way we communicate with each other online, came a new video game platform for developers to create on and users to engage with. A platform that favored a fun, casual approach to games — where anyone could play at any given time — effectively opening the industry to a brand new market.

As social media gaming continues to evolve, the demand for a better hosting platform to accommodate all the features and game releases grows strong. This is where Playphone enters the picture. As a global leader in social media gaming, Playphone offers users an all-in-one destination to discover and play their favorite games with friends on their networks. While based in Silicon Valley, California, the company has extended its reach domestically and internationally in San Jose, California; Brooklin, Sao Paulo; Beijing, China; and the United Kingdom.

Recently, Playphone has further expanded in Asia by partnering with Taiwan company Gamania Digital Entertainment Co. to make its products available in the region. A move that perfectly aligns with Playphone recently being acquired by Japanese game developer GungHo, one of the largest players in the mobile gaming field.

Ron Czerny, CEO and founder of Playphone, talked with VentureBeat about the company’s success in the mobile gaming industry.

‘Emerging markets are a big focus of our company,” Czerny said. “In partnership with GungHo, we are now launching the Playphone games stores in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and India — and Asia has become a big emerging market for us. In some of the markets network latency, costs of data, or even credit card penetration is very poor and Playphone is working very rapidly in partnership with GungHo and local players to solve these problems.”

Regarding local players, Czerny explained: “In Taiwan, as an example, we would partner with Gash. Gash is the number one local payment system for gaming and that will facilitate and help developers and local gamers to access different platforms and thousands of games that we’ll be making available to the Taiwanese and Hong Kong market.”
