Don’t watch Sony’s big media presentation during the Electronic Entertainment Expo tradeshow in the comfort of your home. You should instead pay $15 for popcorn and watch it at a movie theater.

Sony announced today that it’s working with movie theaters in 40 cities around the country to livestream the PlayStation E3 briefing on June 9 at 5:30 p.m. Pacific time. This event will broadcast the whole event in HD as it happens along with 30 minutes of exclusive video that only people in the theaters will get to see. People who attend may also get a “PlayStation surprise,” according to Sony. While the annual E3 show attracts a lot of attention from gamers, publishers like Sony and Nintendo are both introducing ways to expand that experience to fans around the United States.

In addition to the E3 presentation itself, the 30 minutes of extra video will have television personality Geoff Keighley, host of cable channel Spike’s GTTV gaming show, talking with developers about their work.

Sony has a list of participating theaters available on its Eventgrid website, and you can get tickets now. Admission is free and seating is open. Oh, and leave the kids at home because the event details note that you “must be 17 years of age or older to attend.”

While Sony is partnering with movie theaters, Nintendo previously announced that it is bringing a demo of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U to select Best Buy retail outlets around the country. Microsoft, however, has not announced any consumer-outreach programs as part of its E3.

E3 begins June 10, with press briefings from Sony, Microsoft, and others starting on June 9. We’ll have plenty of coverage and hands-on impressions with all the big games, so check back with us over the next few weeks.
