PocketGear, operator of a mobile application store, today announced it has raised a second round of funding for $15 million. The funds will be used to continue product development, increase its sales and marketing team and expand globally, according to the company’s announcement.

PocketGear provides over 140,000 mobile apps and pieces of content, such as software, in its marketplace, which includes 2,000-plus devices across all major operating systems and platforms, including Symbian, Palm, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and Java. Customers can be found in more than 175 countries. A quick glance PocketGear’s Android marketplace shows top-selling gaming apps like Par 72 Golf II and Impossible Level Game 1.0 as well as software content OfficeSuite Viewer, a viewer for most document formats.

The company now claims it’s the largest mobile app and content marketplace after its recent acquisition of smartphone app maker Handango. PocketGear now works with more than 32,000 developers through its developer program and 40 partners, including 4 of the world’s top 5 handset makers, 3 of the world’s top 10 mobile operators and 4 of the top 5 US mobile operators.

The Durham, N.C.-based company, founded in 2008, previously raised $3.25 million in a first round of funding. The most recent round was led by Trident Capital with participation from BlackBerry Partners Fund.
