Pokémon Go’s ‘baby’ update disappoints some fans

Niantic has revealed that it is releasing new creatures in Pokémon Go, but many fans are not satisfied with the developer’s latest addition to 2016’s biggest mobile game.

The update, which is live now, only introduces a handful of new pocket monsters. In the eggs you find at Pokéstops, you can now hatch creatures like Cleffa and Igglybuff. These are creatures that first debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver on Game Boy in 1998, which represent the second generation of Pokémon games. Gold and Silver introduced 100 new critters that were not in the original of Pokémon Red or Blue. They also weren’t in the original version of Pokémon Go. But fans were expecting Niantic to update its location-based digital-animal-capturing game with all 100 Gen 2 creatures. Instead, it looks like players can expect somewhere between four and eight new monsters as part of this event.

So far, players have found the baby Pokémon Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi, and Pichu. These were four of the eight Pokémon that players could hatch from eggs in Gold and Silver. We’ve asked Niantic for more information about this update and its plans for future updates.

“This was the big announcement,” Pokémon Go fan Cristóbal Toledo wrote on the game’s Facebook page. “What about the whole second generation? And the legendary Pokemon? And the trades? And the battles? Very bad, Niantic.”

Toledo isn’t alone. Dozens of posts on forums and hundreds on the Facebook page echo that criticism with the studio. Many fans are likely feeling even more disappointed because rumors claimed Pokémon Go would soon get the entire Gen 2 roster. Because of this, the reveal that only a small batch of hatchlings are available has caused a rather negative reaction. Many fans are accusing Niantic of only doing this to increase its revenues since players will need to purchase special items to incubate more than one egg at once.

“Professor Willow has discovered that cramming Togepi and Pichu in eggs and keeping them from actually spawning drastically increases incubator sales,” fan Anders Kristoffersson wrote in a post on the game’s Facebook page. “Professor Willow is an asshole.”

Not all players are upset with Niantic. Some people see the babies as a nice start, and those players are asking for others to have some patience.

“I don’t really mind it as long as the rest of Gen 2 will be released in the near future,” Reddit user Hoelala1 wrote in a post.

Of course, even someone as reasonable as Hoelala still has some criticisms of the game’s holiday even that will give Pikachu a festive hat and increase their spawn rate.

“I’m more upset because the Christmas event is a complete joke,” Hoelala1 continued. All they did was give Pikachu a hat. Could have been cool if every pokemon had a rare chance to wear a christmas hat, kinda like shinies, but this is really disappointing.”
