Tinder has been accused of being an app for sourcing hook-ups, so it’s adding some substance to its platform.

Starting today, the company is updating dating profiles to include information about a person’s employment and education. The new information will appear in Tinder profiles at the bottom of the screen.

The company said that consumers had been asking for the additional information to help them make better decisions about who to swipe right on. The added context also provides Tinder users with an opportunity for informal networking in addition to dates.

In this update, Tinder also refreshed its messaging interface. The app now helps users sort their messages more easily by differentiating between on-going conversations and new messages.

Match Split Search Bar

Tinder users will be able to see new matches at the top of the screen and texts from users they’ve already been chatting with below.

Tinder said it’s refined its algorithm to make better matches, in general. It noted that new features like the Super Like, and now professional and educational profile data, are helping make its suggestion engine more precise. But more data in this case might not always be a good thing. There’s a certain spontaneity that comes with connecting to someone when you aren’t factoring in their 9-to-5. By connecting people who have too much in common, data might be killing some of Tinder’s spontaneity.
