Sometimes you want a game developer to stick to its niche. That’s definitely the case with studio Supergiant Games, which is one of the only studios making gorgeous 2D action adventures.
Supergiant revealed its next release is Pyre, a new action game set in purgatory, that will hit PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017, according to studio founder Greg Kasavin. Players will take on the role of several “masked wanderers” who must survive a competition to win their freedom. As with Supergiant’s Bastion and Transistor, the first thing that jumps out at you is Pyre’s incredible audio-visual atmosphere. The company carved out an audience with Bastion by establishing that style, and now it’s building on that success to help it continue surviving and thriving as an independent studio in the $99.3 billion gaming industry.

While Pyre won’t debut until 2017, Supergiant is bringing its third game to the Penny Arcade Expo East this weekend. Gamers will get the chance to try it for themselves.
Pyre is the second Supergiant game to come to PlayStation 4 before the Xbox One, and it shows that Sony Interactive Entertainment is continuing its efforts to keep indie studios supporting its successful home console. So far this generation, Sony hasn’t had many breakout, exclusive triple-A hits for the PS4 — but it has nearly made up for that dearth with endless launches from smaller studios that debut their latest projects on Sony systems well before their Xbox counterparts.
As we move into 2017 — a year that should have no shortage of amazing blockbuster experiences for PS4 — it’s clear that Sony has no intention of abandoning one of the strategies that has helped it get to this point in the first place.
