Quip now lets you do more from Slack

Word processing app company Quip today is announcing a new degree of integration within the team communication app Slack. This builds on Quip’s initial integration into Slack that arrived in May.

Today’s updates will make it easier for joint Slack and Quip users to create new Quip documents based on what’s shared in Slack.

Here are the new slash commands:

• “/quip new Project Plan” – creates a new document named “Project Plan”
• “/quip spreadsheet Revenue Projects” – creates a new spreadsheet named “Revenue Projections”
• “/quip checklist Product Task List’ – creates a new checklist document named “Product Task List”
• “/quip notepad” – creates a channel notepad document and sets it as the destination for the new note, task, and grab slash commands
• “/quip note Discuss client proposal” – adds the text “Discuss client proposal” to the channel notepad
• “/quip task Release iOS app” – adds the task “Release iOS app” to the channel notepad
• “/quip grab” – grabs the last Slack message in your channel and adds it to your channel notepad
• “/quip grab 10” – grabs the most recent 10 messages and adds them as a bulleted list to the channel notepad

When you type in any of these commands, Quip will go to work creating documents as necessary and then provide links.

Many other applications, including Trello and Kayak, have integrated with Slack this year, just as applications can integrate with Atlassian’s HipChat, Skype, and other work-oriented messaging applications. So this isn’t a very unusual or surprising thing to see Quip do. What’s interesting is how Quip sees Slack not as a tool that’s used alongside Quip but as a place where new documents can take root.

Quip launched a redesign in February. The startup was founded in 2012. Quip’s CEO, Bret Taylor, recently joined the board of Twitter.
