Resolution Games takes solitaire into virtual reality for the Samsung Gear VR

If you’re going to create a simple game for a brand-new medium, it might as well be a take on … solitaire.

Resolution Games, the Swedish virtual reality game studio that Candy Crush Saga leader Tommy Palm created, is showing off its first game, Solitaire Jester, for the Samsung Gear VR today. It’s “the world’s first virtual reality solitaire game.” That might sound like a dubious accomplishment, but it does show how just about any game can work with VR — and still seem like it’s groundbreaking.

While the team is showing its game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, it’s not going to be live on the Oculus VR app store until the consumer version of the Samsung Gear VR headset ships later this year.

Stockholm-based Resolution Games wants to make casual releases for virtual reality platforms, and Solitaire Jester is the first. Palm said more games will be coming in a variety of genres.

Solitaire Jester teleports players to their own relaxing private library where they can enjoy some time off and hang out in front of the fireplace while playing a classic card game. Palm said it’s a great way for players to take their minds off their busy days while they hone their matchmaking skills. The Jester, a small companion character, hangs around on the desk to keep players company and cheer them on when they make good plays.

“We wanted to show that anything is possible when it comes to gameplay on VR,” said Palm, the cofounder and CEO of Resolution Games, in a statement. “We were able to build this simple game while still expressing the full value of VR’s presence and great graphics with today’s smartphones. It also shows that VR games are not just for violent, hardcore games and instead can have a broad target audience who seek familiar gameplay that is easy to understand and get into – creating relaxing experiences.”
