Samsung is ‘temporarily adjusting’ Galaxy Note7 production after more explosions

Following a report last night from the Korean news organization Yonhap stating that Samsung had temporarily halted production of the premium Galaxy Note7 smartphone, a Samsung spokesperson today told VentureBeat in an email that the company is “temporarily adjusting the Galaxy Note7 production schedule.”

The move follows a recall of the Note7 and multiple reports of faulty replacement Note7’s.

“We are temporarily adjusting the Galaxy Note7 production schedule in order to take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters,” the spokesperson said in today’s statement.

The decision comes after the phone initially received positive critical reception. The Verge deemed the Note7 “the best big phone ever made,” before issuing an editor’s note on September 2 saying that the Verge doesn’t recommend that people buy the phone.

Earlier this week, Samsung said that it understood concerns over the reports of problems with the replacement version of the Note7.

“We recognize that carrier partners have stopped sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7 in response to reports of heat damage issues, and we respect their decision,” the company said. “We are working diligently with authorities and third party experts and will share findings when we have completed the investigation. Even though there are a limited number of reports, we want to reassure customers that we are taking every report seriously. If we determine a product safety issue exists, Samsung will take immediate steps approved by the CPSC to resolve the situation.”

Yesterday AT&T and T-Mobile said they would no longer exchange customers’ Note7’s for new ones.

Update at 3:02 p.m. Pacific: Samsung has just released a statement saying that it will tell all carriers and retailers to stop taking Galaxy Note7 orders and exchanges, while it investigates “recently reported cases” of issues with replacement units of the phone. “We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation,” the statement said. “Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Galaxy Note7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available.”
