They may never do a Harvard Business School study about Australian developer Mathew Carpenter, but they sure as hell should.
In just a few hours, the 22-year-old built ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com. It does exactly what it names implies. He wrote a hilarious explainer on the website. And then spammed out a few emails to reporters at organizations who couldn’t resist the siren song of a few good chuckles and mountains of pageviews. (Like me!)
Then, Carpenter put the whole thing up for sale on Flippa.com. Just how was the site doing? According to Flippa:

“After being launched on January 12th of this month it has seen over 2,500,000 visitors, received over 415,000 mentions on Facebook & Twitter & has been featured all over the world both online, in print, on the radio, on TV & even on late night talk shows. After being online for only a few hours, the website had received over 2,000 orders generating just over $20,000AUD. Somewhat overwhelmed, I then decided to take the ability to order down despite receiving thousands of emails & tweets from people wanting to purchase.”
And, Blamo! Just like that, the bidding closed last night and someone paid him $85,000 USD for the whole thing. He hasn’t disclosed the name of the lucky buyer, but we’ll update if he does.
For now, though, we genuflect before his greatness. Well played, sir.
Updated: According to a press release from Flippa.com, the winning bidder is Peter Boychuk, an online entrepreneur who has been part of the “Flippa community” for the past year. In a statement, Boychuk said: “I’m extremely excited to be the new owner of ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com. There’s huge opportunity for growth with this business and I certainly plan on taking advantage of the attention it has received.”
Good news for those of you dying to punk your worst enemies: Boychuk says he will restart orders and will fulfill 10,000 orders that Carpenter was not able to complete.
In a statement, Carpenter said: “If you’d told me 22 days ago when I registered the domain name that someone would later purchase it for $85,000 on Flippa, I wouldn’t have believed you.”
Me neither, Mathew. Me neither.
