Shyp is expanding nationwide — well, sort of. The shipping logistics company has released its carrier rate comparison tool to any business in the U.S., alleviating a pain point many businesses have when delivering their product to customers.

People think of Shyp as “the Uber for shipping,” and it’s known for helping businesses deal with shipping-related logistics. But now it’s making a bid to become “the Kayak of shipping,” as it offers businesses a way to find the cheapest carriers around the country.

With the updated app, merchants can enter in the origin, destination, and dimensions of the package they want sent. Carrier rates will be displayed for comparison, and after users select one, they have the opportunity to print a shipping label.

“We’ve heard from businesses that the more established, the more they’ve figured out packaging. It’s not what excites them about Shyp,” the company told VentureBeat. “It’s about cost. In meeting with customers, we hear time and time again, packaging is what they’ve figured out, but they would like to use Shyp’s pricing comparison tool and print out their own shipping labels.”

While only the software is becoming available nationwide, Shyp chief executive Kevin Gibbon believes that the data gleaned from this launch will inform which additional markets the company will expand its services to in the next year.

Merchants will now also be able to use this tool on their computer, thanks to the launch of a desktop experience. Shyp’s first web product features the carrier rate comparison tool, as well as the newly debuted business dashboard, which offers a single place to manage all shipments.

After selecting a carrier, the next thing is to affix a shipping label, but there’s no way to readily print right from your mobile device. That’s why Shyp will let you print it wirelessly or even email the label to yourself. The you can print it out and attach it to your package. This is where the company receives some additional revenue — there’s a fee for this step, based on how many labels you use. After the first label is printed, you have 90 days to print more, after which they’ll cost $0.50 each to purchase. If you’re printing more than 20 labels per month, it’ll go down to $0.25 per label; more than 50 items will be $0.10 per label; and more than 300 items will be $0.05 per label.

The carrier rate comparison tool will be available through the Shyp app. If you’re using it in markets where the company’s delivery service doesn’t yet operate, you’ll only see the carrier comparison tool. We’re told that it will limit what you see based on the home address you enter into the app.

The launch of this nationwide service comes two months after Shyp revealed its latest business plan push with discounted pricing for bulk deliveries.
