Sprint & Techstars meet in Kansas City to start a health-tech accelerator

In partnership with Techstars, the multi-city accelerator program, Sprint’s Mobile Health Accelerator is welcoming 10 young American and Australian companies to Kansas City.

These startups are developing solutions that “encompass hardware, software platforms, transformative services, big data, and mobile applications,” according to a statement on the news.

This is the accelerator’s inaugural class, and it is part of the Sprint’s efforts to grow Kansas City’s startup community.

The program will last three months, will take place in Kansas City’s Crossroads district, and will provide the participating startups with mentoring from “leading technology experts from Sprint, regional health care leaders, and successful entrepreneurs from around the country,” according to the program. Each startup will also receive up to $120,000 in funding.

Health-tech accelerators are nothing new. There is of course Rock Health, as well as Tigerlabs, StartUp Health, The Iron Yard, and a host of others. Health tech also make a big splash at this year’s South by Southwest, as we reported.

Naturally, as a telecommunications company, Sprint’s angle on this will be to especially foster mobile products. As we see health devices and apps catch on more and more, this accelerator may very well turn out to be successful.

This first class of startups is comprised of Akibah, Fitbark (doggy health!), Lifeline Response, Medicast, Ollo Mobile, Prime, Sickweather (social health!), Symptom.ly, Tenacity Health, and Yosko.
