According to Parag Vaish, Head of Mobile for StubHub, the future of mobile doesn’t include the mobile web. He believes the time is not far off where apps will be available to users any time without having to download and take up precious hard drive space.

“If you had that, you’re essentially creating a world where apps are always available to you and you don’t have a need for mobile web any longer. That’s a game changer as far as I can tell and I think there are some plays happening in that direction.”

That said, when asked what the biggest change in mobile has been in the past year, Vaish quickly points to in-app mobile payments. He’s found that customers using Apple Pay or Android Pay come back more frequently and transact repeatedly.

“Bringing down friction is a really big deal — and as you do that throughout the payment process, through the onboarding experiencing, through logging in using touch ID — those things all will help towards making a better experience which then leads to higher conversion rates.”

He cautioned app publishers of acquiring customers through paid vehicles as it often turns into an exercise of throwing money at low-quality users. “So you spend a bunch of money, they download your app, and they may not ever come back. So you have to focus on a set of tools that retains those customers, gives them value all along.” For Vaish, that’s creating an end-to-end journey that takes explicit and implicit information to personalize the user experience.
