Nintendo’s little plumber still makes big bucks.

The publisher confirmed to GamesBeat that Super Mario Maker has surpassed 1 million copies sold in the United States. It is now the sixth Wii U game to hit that milestone for the company’s Wii U console. Mario Maker had a strong holiday on the buzz from its reviews as well as winning GamesBeat’s Game of the Year award.

The other million-selling Wii U games are:

  • Mario Kart 8
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • New Super Mario Bros. U
  • Splatoon

With Mario Maker, the player community builds and share levels based on classic games like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, and more. It has benefited from its huge player base in the number of creative levels that anyone can find by booting up the game on a daily basis. It’s also prospered from the number of people sharing levels on Twitch and YouTube.

Selling 1 million copies of this game in the U.S. is good news for Nintendo as it begins transitioning to new hardware sometime in the near future. The publisher has already started teasing its “NX” system, and we expect to learn a lot more about that in the next year.

Looking forward to the rest of the year for Wii U and 3DS, however, Nintendo is relying on some familiar favorites. These includes The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi, and Pokémon. The company is planning for those franchises to carry its momentum into the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in June and then into the launch of the NX.
