South by Southwest, the burgeoning, Austin-based geek/tech/music/movie festival, is expanding to Las Vegas.

It will feature “four days of informative panels and workshops, inspirational speakers, intensive mentor and coaching programs, networking events and receptions, pitch competitions and startup showcases.”
It happens August 11-14, 2013, in the trendy Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas. The timing is interesting, given that many Silicon Valley venture capitalists tend to take August vacations, so deal activity tends to be low during that time. It’s either the perfect time to hold a conference or the worst, depending on whether the VCs SXSW hopes to attract will be zipping over from Silicon Valley in their copious free time or grumbling about having to fly back from the Cook Islands.

The organization chose Las Vegas because of its proximity to Silicon Valley, according to an Austin Business Journal report — and because of a $350 million downtown Vegas renovation project headed by Zappos.com founder Tony Hsieh.
