So you want to join a startup? You’re ready for the crazy perks, long hours, and nagging fear that the company may buckle at any moment?

With tech jobs plentiful right now, it’s not easy to discern between the good, bad, ugly, and severely underpaid startup jobs. So I’ve started starting a new weekly jobs digest that will help you choose between an overwhelming number of positions. The list includes a variety of technical and non-technical jobs, so you may still find an attractive position even if you don’t code..

Thank you, readers, for alerting me to new opportunities. If you’ve got a tip, my preferred methods of communication are Twitter (reach me at @chrissyfarr) and email. Please include a description of the post. Bonus points if it’s not public yet.

To reiterate, here’s what I’m looking for:

AI Weekly

The must-read newsletter for AI and Big Data industry written by Khari Johnson, Kyle Wiggers, and Seth Colaner.

Included with VentureBeat Insider and VentureBeat VIP memberships.

  • The job itself must be cool. I’m looking for a job description or opportunity that stands out.
  • The company must not be boring.
  • “Big swings” are god!
  • Location is everything. We’ll give you a mix of startups in the Bay Area, New York, and in other cities across the U.S.
  • Culture and perks. Who doesn’t want a gym membership and opportunity for international travel?

Here are the startup jobs of the week:

Senior data scientist at Eventbrite

By our enterprise writer, Jordan Novet
Why: This hugely popular website for sending and managing invitations to events wants someone to help with business strategy, pricing, adding customers, and other high-profile works in progress. While the new hire won’t be Evenrbrite’s first data scientist — the company already has at least two — you probably won’t have to worry about Eventbrite being able to pay a substantial salary, as the company just raised $60 million based on a $1 billion valuation.
The job: Senior data scientist
Stage: IPO candidate
The location: San Francisco

Community evangelist at RethinkDB

Why? Want to help a tiny database startup hire technical talent away from its competition, namely MongoDB? Venture-backed RethinkDB is on the hunt for its first community evangelist. Consider applying for this gig if you’ve got a strong understanding of at least one programming language but prefer to network with developers rather than code all day. The job requires lots of travel, and you’ll be expected to attend networking events to speak on behalf of RethinkDB, which describes itself as an “open-source distributed database built with love.”
The job: Community evangelist
Stage: Early
Location: Mountain View, Calif.
Apply here.

Small-business advocate at ZenPayroll

Why? This startup is helping small businesses set up and run payrolls in minutes. The team is looking to hire a liaison to work with the product and design team and small business owners. The job requires getting out into the field and gathering feedback from customers — it’s not ideal for a wallflower. ZenPayroll offers one of the coolest perks in the startup world: Employees who hit their one-year anniversary receive a round-trip plane ticket to anywhere in the world.
The job: Small business advocate
Stage: Mid.
Location: San Francisco
Apply here.

Content specialist at Asana

Why? Asana prides itself on being the “chillest” startup in San Francisco. Its founders blog about Burning Man, and the office is in the Mission, the city’s most hipster neighborhood. But Asana is building serious productivity tools for businesses and teams. The company is the brainchild of former Google engineer Justin Rosenstein and Facebook founder Dustin Moskovitz, who got the idea after spending a few minutes playing with Yammer. “The first time I looked at Yammer, I thought I was on Facebook,” he told the New York Times. “Work is not a social network.” Asana is looking for a content specialist to manage its editorial calendar and write for the Asana blog, among other things.
The job: Content marketing manager
Stage: Early to mid.
Location: San Francisco
Apply here.

Social media strategy at Skyhigh Networks

Why? Cloud security may not sound like the sexiest business, but it’s big business. Skyhigh Networks, backed by Greylock Ventures and Sequoia Capital, is hiring like crazy. The company is looking for someone to run its social media strategy and execute new campaigns each quarter. According to spokesperson Katy Garlinghouse, it’s an easygoing company culture, and the top execs “leave their egos at the door.”
The job: Social media associate
Stage: Mid.
Location: Cupertino, Calif.
Apply here.
