The Backed Pack: A photo-printing phone case, a diabetes management tool, & a smart mattress cover

Each week, our friends at Backerjack bring us updates on some of the most successful gadget crowdfunding campaigns.

Prynt

As their cameras get ever better, smartphones have become the go-to device that many people use to take photos. Prynt is a camera case for iPhones and Android smartphones that enables the user to instantly print out any photo that is taken with the device. The San Francisco and Paris-based team of developers is using the same ZINK Zero Ink printing technology that’s been used in products like Polaroid’s instant mobile printers. The special paper that’s used has ink embedded inside, eliminating the need for any ink cartridges that need to be replaced.

Prynt was only looking for $50,000 on Kickstarter, but has already raised almost $1,000,000 with weeks still left to go on the campaign. Clearly, the portable Polaroid-like feel of Prynt has backers begging for more.

Diabetes affects many people, but the way to manage the disease is fairly basic. Those afflicted must constantly watch their glucometer to make sure they’re safe. Now, like many other afflictions, diabetes can be monitored with a smartphone. Diabeto is a small device that transmits readings from a glucometer to a smartphone app, Web app, or Pebble smartwatch. The app allows one to track their mood, activity, carbohydrates, insulin levels and blood glucose. It was designed to be easy enough for children to use and even looks like a children’s toy.

Diabeto joins the booming smart medical market and has raised 150% of its original goal on Indiegogo. Clearly backers with diabetes or those who know someone with diabetes want this product pushed into production.

Luna

Luna is a smart mattress cover able to manage the user’s bed temperature and track sleep habits using multiple hidden sensors, including an ambient light sensor and temperature humidity sensor. The thin cover can also be integrated with the user’s other smart home devices to turn off lights, lock doors, change the thermostat, or make sure coffee is brewed when the user needs it each morning. Luna’s dual zone technology provides the option for users and their partners to select different temperatures for each side of the bed.

Luna has raised over six times its original goal on Indiegogo — that’s over $650,000. Backers who are sleep-challenged are racing to this campaign in order to help the Luna enjoy some success.
