Every year, the game industry creates their own geek-centric holiday cards. Here's what arrived at the GamesBeat office this year.
In the video game industry, everyone eats sliders and pizza every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and we all call everything “awesome” unless it is specifically not awesome. Everyone knows these traditions. Slightly less well known (but no less celebrated) is this: Many companies create and send out their own geek-centric holiday cards.
Here’s what arrived at the GamesBeat offices this year, both physically and digitally. And while we didn’t actually get you anything this year, from all of us here, we wish you a wondrous holiday full of family and friends in the reality of your choice.
If this image looks familiar, it’s because it’s a reissue of the card famed artist Ralph McQuarrie created for Lucasfilm in 1981. The card itself is dedicated to McQuarrie, who died on March 3.
The team behind XCOM: Enemy Unknown killed two holiday birds with one stone. Once you opened this card, you got a recorded voice message. …
“Happy holidays, Commander. The council has been … pleased with your leadership of the XCOM project thus far. Many of our operatives have fallen. But your efforts to eliminate the alien threat have not gone unnoticed. We trust that these efforts will continue through the holiday season by considering XCOM: Enemy Unknown for any annual video game awards. Future funding of the XCOM project may depend on it. The council is counting on you, Commander.”
Evolve PR (who handles public relations for a number of game franchises, including The Witcher and Section 8) sent us a JibJab card about caroling and farts, two great tastes that go great together.
CD Projekt RED. It also included this holiday wish: “There are a lot of quests for you in 2013, we’re sure. Before you embark on your adventures, though, we would like to give you our best wishes and let you know we hope you will have:- a great party of friends who will accompany you wherever you go- unforgettable memories to fill your journal with- a chance to unlock all of your achievements that you’re working on- the might to vanquish all of the nasty critters in your life Happy Holidays from us to you!”
