Tiny tracker Tile can finally help Android users find their missing keys

Tile, the small tracking device that helps you keep track of all kinds of items, has finally made its way to Android.

Equipped with a Bluetooth Low Energy chip, Tile connects with nearby smartphones sporting its companion app to help you find the item its attached to. Starting today, Tile’s app is also available for Android after a popular run on iOS.

Launching on Android is key to Tile’s performance, as the network works better the more people have the app on their phone, cofounder and chief executive Nick Evans shared when the company last raised funding. A denser network means better coverage and higher chances the network will pick up a tracker’s signal.

To start, Tile’s Android app is optimized for the following Android 4.4+ devices: Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One, HTC One M8, LG Nexus 4, and LG Nexus 5. Because the app depends so heavily on the phone’s hardware, Tile is optimizing it for each individual Android handset with Bluetooth Low Energy.

Tile has also manufactured enough devices to fulfill all of its pre-orders to date and will finish shipping those out immediately, the company says.

Tile was founded in 2012 by Nick Evans and Mike Farley and is based in San Mateo, Calif. The company has raised $15.68 million in total funding from investors such as GGV Capital Rothenberg Ventures, AME Cloud Ventures, Slow Ventures, Charles Huang, and Chris Hulls, among others.
