Twitter changes rules to curb revenge porn

Twitter said last month that it’s fed up with the negative tones and bad behavior on its site, and this month it’s taking another step to change things.

At 6PM Eastern Time Wednesday it introduced new language on its Twitter Rules page to prohibit the posting of stolen nude images and revenge porn.

This new verbiage appears in the “Privacy” section of its Rules page: “You may not post intimate photos or videos that were taken or distributed without the subject’s consent,” the rules now read.

This new language was added to Twitter’s Abusive Behavior policy page: “In addition, users may not post intimate photos or videos that were taken or distributed without the subject’s consent.”

Last month Twitter CEO Dick Costolo sent out a memo bemoaning the bullying and other abusive behavior taking place on the microblogging site.

Costolo believes the behavior is driving people away from using the microblogging platform. And Twitter — at 284 million registered users (and far fewer regular users) — needs to keep growing its user base to support the advertising needs of its big-brand clients.

“We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years,” Costolo said in an internal memo that was obtained by The Verge.
