Twitter suffers series of major outages

Twitter suffered a series of major outages today, with the social network acknowledging the problem on a number of public forums — including on Twitter itself.

Twitter logged the issues at 00:43 Pacific, although, according to Down Detector, problems first started occurring around 00:27 Pacific. According to Down Detector’s live outage map, the problem seems largely contained to Europe, which is still a huge market for Twitter.

Many who reported problems quickly regained access to the service, only to suffer further outages shortly after. The problem seems to be affecting Twitter.com and the mobile apps, though TweetDeck hasn’t been fully functional, either.

Though most of Twitter’s core features seem to now be working again, there are still issues across the board, including with the search function, according to Twitter’s own API Status tool. The outage, which has lasted more than two hours at the time of writing, certainly represents one of the longer disruptions for the social network.

VentureBeat has reached out to Twitter and will update here when we receive an explanation for the continuing problems.

Update at 10 a.m. Pacific: The Twitter status website says the problem has been resolved.

The intermittent issue affecting some users between 00:40 to 06:50 PST has now been resolved. The issue was related to an internal code change. We reverted the change, which fixed the issue. Thank you for your patience.

Twitter didn’t share more details about what exactly the “internal code change” was and why it couldn’t be reverted sooner. Six hours of issues is quite the headache.
