Twitter will reportedly stop counting photos, links in 140-character tweet limit

Twitter might be making it easier to compose tweets, according to Bloomberg. It’s reported that the company will soon no longer count photos and links against its 140-character limit and that this plan may happen in “the next two weeks.”

As Twitter continues to pursue its mission of being of vital importance around live events, it sees a lot of tweets that contain photos and links to commentary; by including these elements in the character count, Twitter hinders people’s ability to communicate. The company does shorten links already, but sometimes you just need a bit more space.

This isn’t the first time that Twitter has modified its character limit — it abandoned the restriction when it comes to direct messages, now allowing you to send up to 10,000 character screeds to people in private. But by alleviating this pain point, Twitter is offering a bit of a compromise between those who want more space and those who hope the 140-character limit doesn’t go away.
