Beginning today, customers of Verizon’s fiber home Internet service, Verizon FiOS, will be able to upload files as quickly as they download them. The company announced an upgrade that it hopes will appeal to customers who frequently share content online.

Many of us can remember a time when downloading a file on the Web would take several minutes. Service providers have done a good job of cutting down the wait, but upload times have continued to lag. Verizon’s update to FiOS addresses this issue.

“All Internet sharing – whether videos, large photo files, or gaming – starts with uploading,” said Mike Ritter, Verizon’s chief marketing officer for consumer and mass business. “FiOS all-fiber-optic technology offers a unique opportunity to enhance our customers’ Internet experience on a mass scale by increasing our upload speeds to equal our industry-leading download speeds.”

According to Verizon’s projections, the amount of upload activity on the FiOS network is expected to double by 2016.

Verizon FiOS customers won’t need to change what they’re doing to receive faster upload speeds. The company said that it will roll out these upgrades to its existing residential customers over the course of the next few months. Small business customers will receive the upgrade later this year.

However, there’s an option for those who just can’t wait — customers can sign up for the Verizon My Rewards+ program and start experiencing the speed immediately. If you’re a frequent content sharer, you might want to take a look at this option sooner rather than later.
