One of the most popular free-to-play games on consoles gets a big update today.
Warframe, the sci-fi shooter from developer Digital Extremes, has a lot of new content today to keep its players coming back. This update is called Ring of Fire, and it introduces a new class along with new weapons and customizations. With this game generating more than $1 million per month across all platforms, according to research firm SuperData, Digital Extremes obviously wants to keep its audience engaged and spending money.
Warframe is among the top 50 most popular games on the Xbox One game store, and it is the second most popular free-to-play game behind only the popular multiplayer online arena battler Smite. And that console audience has a decent chance of already having their credit-card information stored on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, which could lead to the company capturing even more of the $96 million free-to-play console market.
As for what is different in this update, Nezha — the new class — is definitely the highlight. This is a “petite and playful” character with “immense power,” according to Digital Extremes. Keeping with this content’s fiery theme, Nezha specializes in flame attacks and defensive maneuvers.

- Sydon: a trident.
- Destreza: a “Tenno rapier.”
You can, of course, also expect new helmets, skins, and other items to deck out your existing characters with shiny new fashions.
Ring of Fire is out today on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and it is also available on PC.
