Virtual reality is giving players a more immersive connection to video game worlds, and one of the best early examples of this is an Oculus Rift launch title that plays a whole lot like classic games you remember from the Nintendo 64.

Lucky’s Tale is out now for Oculus VR’s head-mounted display, and we are enjoying our time with it. Unlike most early virtual experiences for the Rift or competing devices like HTC’s Vive, Lucky’s Tale is a game where you aren’t looking through a character’s eyes. Instead, you have the kind of view that a kid has when they play with their toys. Surprisingly, this is still immersive. It’s like sitting in the world of Super Mario 64 while controlling Nintendo’s Italian plumber instead of having to look at him through the window of your television.

Tech adviser Digi-Capital is predicting VR could grow into a $30 billion industry by 2020, and games like Lucky’s Tale make that seem plausible. By feeling like you’re in the world, developer Playful has removed one of the biggest barriers for these kinds of platforming releases: You don’t have to think about the camera. Instead, you look around the way you do in the physical world by moving your head. This could attract new audiences that would have previously struggled with controlling a camera via an analog stick on a gamepad.

If you’re curious about the game, why don’t you watch us play it in the video below:
