Electronic Arts isn’t a publisher known for taking risks, but it is giving at least one smaller game a chance in 2016.
Next week, EA and developer ColdWood Interactive release Unravel, a puzzle-platformer game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s a smaller work for EA, costing $20, and it doesn’t feature explosions and automatic military weapons. It is all about the bonds that exist between people. This is a bit unexpected for EA — a company known for the Battlefield shooters and Madden NFL games — but it is trying to position this game in a way to broaden the kinds of games it is offering. This is important as more players buy into its EA Access and Origin Access subscription services for the Xbox One and PC, respectively. The publisher is likely trying to get different kinds of people to subscribe to that program — which provides early trials, a library of older games, and discounts — by introducing a wider variety of games. That way, if someone signs up for Access to get Unravel, maybe they’ll check out Dragon Age: Inquisition next.
The game puts players in the role of Yarny, a magical creature made of red yarn that connects an older woman to her estranged family. While the game launches on February 9, GamesBeat is playing it right now for review. And I wanted to share some of the action with you to help you get an idea of what it is like.
But for now, it’s time to appreciate Unravel on its own, and I’m streaming the game live right now in the video below:
