We seriously could not crack the screen of Motorola’s shatterproof Turbo 2

This morning, Verizon and Motorola revealed their next-generation Droid phones: the shatterproof Turbo 2 and the less interesting Droid Maxx 2.

Of the two phones, the Turbo is more feature-rich, with faster battery charging, more storage, and a better processor. But perhaps its most compelling feature is Motorola’s “ShatterShield” technology, which prevents the phone’s screen from shattering.

When we tested the phone’s shatterproof claims, the Turbo 2 held up. Dropping it on its face some 30 times failed to shatter the screen, though it did produce some light scratching. Also, the sides were fairly dinged up. But true to promise, the screen did not crack.

Then we tried running with the phone and dropping it — it did not crack. We tried smashing the phone — it did not shatter. Verizon specifically asked us not to do that, but we felt compelled to put their claim to the test.

Here’s our hands-on with the device, followed by plenty of cringe-worthy attempts to shatter the Turbo 2.

Both the Maxx 2 and the Turbo 2 will be available in stores and online starting Thursday, October 29.

The Droid Turbo 2 will retail for $624. Those who sign up for a contract with Verizon can have the 32GB phone for $26 per month for 24 months. The 64GB phone will cost $30 per month over the same time period. The Droid Maxx 2 will be $16 per month for 24 months, or $384.
