How well did Microsoft do with Windows Phone 7? Try 2 million units shipped

Samsung's Focus Windows Phone 7 deviceA day before its quarterly earnings report, Microsoft finally let loose with some Windows Phone 7 details. The biggest takeaway: it shipped 2 million Windows Phone 7 devices last quarter, Bloomberg reports.

The news is a good sign for Microsoft’s fledgling mobile platform, but it’s clear that the company still has a long way to go before it can compete toe-to-toe with the more entrenched iPhone, or even Google’s Android platform. Consider, for example, that Apple managed to sell 3 million iPhone 4’s in one month.

In late December, Microsoft reported that it had shipped 1.5 million units. We still don’t know how many phones are actually in customers’ hands though. Shipment numbers tell us how many devices manufacturers deliver to stores, but many of those could still be sitting on shelves.

Customer satisfaction for Windows Phone 7 rose to 93 percent, and brand awareness jumped 22 points to 66 percent, since the phones were released in November, senior product manager Greg Sullivan said. “Sales are an important measure, but for a new platform we think customer satisfaction and active developer support are more important indicators of how sales will be over the long-term,” he said.
