Y Combinator-backed Mosaic connects wearables, Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) bot maker Mosaic announced today that it has been selected for the Y Combinator summer program and has released a new beta version of its assistant on Amazon Alexa, Slack, SMS, and Facebook Messenger.

Mosaic connects a single chatbot to more than a dozen wearables and IoT devices, ranging from lightbulbs to Tesla cars.

Essentially, the chatbot takes all the data we compile in our personal lives and helps us make sense of it.

Mosaic wants to give people advice based on all the data accumulated by wearables and internet-connected devices and can also explain things like water usage and how to get energy.

In the future, Mosaic wants your fitness wearable to talk to you about personal fitness challenges, make sure you’re getting enough sleep, and tell you when you need to exercise

“This is definitely on our roadmap and one of the most interesting things we’re going to do,” said cofounder Sumang Liu.

Workflows on Mosaic let users choose a single word or phrase to complete a series of tasks. For example if you say “Good morning,” the lights turn on, the coffee starts to brew, Nest changes temperature, and a Tesla owner, for example, might learn about the distance a car can travel based on battery life.

Mosaic is part of a group of recent Y Combinator attendees to enter the A.I. and chatbot spaces.

Msg.ai focuses on conversational commerce and analytics, Chatfuel helps people quickly make bots, and TARA bot helps automate the hiring of freelancers.

Liu believes that people will eventually have fewer bots than they do apps. He predicts that bots will swallow infrequently used apps, and that, as people speak more often with bots, users will come to treat their bots like a close circle of friends.

“I think in the future there won’t be that many bots. There will be really just five or 10 bots for your daily life for every person, but those five or 10 bots will be a perfect example of operational intelligence, where each one of them handles a vertical of your life. Mosaic is trying to be your optimal device manager,” Lui said.

Mosaic was founded in 2015 and is based in San Francisco.
