yliveYahoo! has launched Live, their entry into lifecasting. Unfortunately, an error message tells us that due to the high amount of traffic the site is currently getting, the bandwidth limits for the site are being exceeded – and thus, Live is not exactly live.

For brief amount of time I was able to see it earlier this evening, the site did look very nice. Yahoo! is the first real major Internet player to try to tackle the relatively new trend of lifecasting – basically running streaming live video of yourself as you do anything. The big name in this field right now is Justin.tv (our coverage), with Ustream and Mogulus being other big players.

Yahoo’s Live Blog describes their intentions for the site as:

“Y! Live was dreamed up as a way to make it possible for anyone to create their own live video experience. Broadcast the concert you’re at. Webcast your own live DJ set. Lifecast. Build your own live video speed dating application. We’ve created a website and an API that lets you do all these things and many more.”

yahooo live

It’s good to see Yahoo! ahead of their main competitors here in launching such a service. Perhaps this is the sort of venture they should have been attempting last year before things got to the point to where Microsoft launched a hostile bid to take them over.

Yahoo’s Bradley Horowitz posted a message on his Twitter account earlier today:

“live.yahoo.com is, well, live… Help us crush it with load.”

Mission: Accomplished.
